Monopoly Getting Rid of Classic Token; Replacement to be Announced in March
Louise BonquinMonopoly is a board game that has been a favorite for decades already. The game eventually evolved to match the changing times but the mechanics remained the same. Now, it is going through change again as the thimble piece that has been there since 1935 is being eliminated.
The thimble is part of the original Monopoly and due to Hasbro's Monopoly Token Madness event that was launched in January, fans voted out the game piece for the token that they want to be replaced with more relevant pieces. The board game maker revealed that about four million fans cast their votes through the almost a month long run of the event.
The campaign ended on Jan. 31 and the thimble competed with more than 50 token options such as a mobile phone, a roller skate, a jet, cowboy boots, a trumpet, a computer, emojis and more. Hasbro is set to announce the winning token that will be added to the game on the upcoming "World Monopoly Day" on March 19.
Commenting on the removal of the classic token piece, Hasbro told PBS NewsHour, "Despite being an integral part of day-to-day life when the token was originally added to the game in 1935, the lucky thimble has lost its shine with today's fans and will be retired from the game."
The thimble in the Monopoly board game is the second piece to be taken out in recent years. The last time that this happened was in 2013, when players picked the cat piece to take the place of the iron token.
With the thimble being booted out in "Monopoly," the original tokens remaining in the current lineup include the battleship, race car, top hat, rocking horse and a shoe. Finally, after the announcement of the new token that will arrive to the much-loved past-time activity, Hasbro will start releasing the new batch of thimble-less board game in August.
