HTC's recent announcement of HTC 8X and 8S for Windows Phone 8 presented a compelling case for users to switch to Microsoft's mobile platform. The devices brought more color and different hardware compared to competitors, with designs described as the physical representation of a live tile.
Hardware
The comparisons between the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 900 are justified: both devices have a 4-inch screen with a colored back and bezel. HTC created a device that is attractive to look at and hold. To an even greater extent, with the 8S, it built a unique device with a two-tone design. The body of the phone is a solid color, with a 'chin' a different color. A gallery of the phones presents the striking effect.
Appeals to smaller market
Nokia's Lumia 920 is an impressive device, but it is also a large device. For users not wanting an iOS or Android device, but wanting a one-handed screen, HTC's devices look like an answer. The company followed Apple by building taller and not wider devices. For evenings lying in bed and browsing the web, the narrower form factor could be handy - literally.
Created consistent image
As more Windows Phone 8 devices are unveiled, the identity of the devices seems to be focused on color. If true, it presents a contrast to Apple's black-and-white and Android's myriad of form factors. Microsoft is setting consistent minimum hardware requirements, even down to the USB port at the bottom, so users know what to expect. Apple's devices consistently sell well because users know what to expect: quality, and consistency. Microsoft seems to be blending the approaches of Android and iOS.
Not expensive
HTC did not confirm prices or launch dates for the devices specifically on Wednesday; however, mobile phone seller Unlocked-Mobiles.com listed the two prices for HTC 8X and 8S. The prices are reasonable, consumers may think, and cheaper than iPhone 5. Users on contracts may have to pay less to get devices for free so adoption could be encouraged.
Windows Phone 8's release date is to be announced.
