Qualcomm Bites Back At Apple With Own Suit: The Company Alleges That There's No iPhone Without Qualcomm's Tech
Caezar SottoQualcomm has filed a suit against Apple in response to the former's legal attacks. The iPhone-maker filed a case against the SoC manufacturer after allegations of overpricing.
On Monday, Qualcomm responded to the suit and made its accusations against the tech giant. According to the chip maker "The iPhone wouldn't be a success if it weren't for the company's cellular chips."
In a post by BGR, Qualcomm has five key claims against the Cupertino-based company. The SoC manufacturer alleges that Apple breached agreements and interfered with other deals.
Qualcomm also said that Apple disrupted other licensees that manufacture iPhones and iPads. According to PCWorld, the iPhone-maker is using its power to pay less for a patent license.
Apple's suit versus the SoC manufacturer allegedly encouraged regulatory attacks on Qualcomm.
The company received two massive fines in China and South Korea by the FTC weeks before Apple's suit. The fines were a result of antitrust investigations that stemmed from various complaints. Qualcomm also has a pending case from the FTC.
For their part, Apple said that Qualcomm has been abusing its position in the chip industry. Allegedly, the SoC-giant charges higher royalties on standard-essential patents. The company also stated that Qualcomm is forcing them into exclusive deals.
Apple is seeking a $1 billion compensation for paying excessive royalties to Qualcomm. According to its suit, Qualcomm's licensing model bases on the final selling price of a device.
Apple added that the royalty paid by high-end phone makers are higher than manufacturers of low-end cellular phones. Qualcomm's vice-president defended the company against the Cupertino-based company's claims. Don Rosenburg added that Apple relies on their "fundamental mobile technologies."
Qualcomm will "vigorously defend" its business model against Apple. The company will also be seeking unspecified damages from the iPhone-maker. Stay tuned for more updates.
