Google Is Negotiating A $880 Million Investment With LG Display: Will The Pixel 2 Finally Have A Curved Screen?
Caezar SottoAccording to various reports, Google is streamlining issues that hounded the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. If this is true, will the company finally unleash the true potential of one of the world's most underrated smartphones?
Google's Pixel XL was remarkably one of the best devices that came out of the woodworks since the dawn of the smartphone. Notably, the handset unveiled one the best cameras ever integrated into a cell phone in the past few years.
Despite its success, the Pixel variant had some trouble with supplies of the flexible OLED display. The shortage drove Google into a supply problem that manifested when consumers were not able to get their hands on the Premier unit.
Well according to Forbes, Google is investing $880 million to secure an ample supply of OLED panels from LG Display. The mega-deal is indicative that production for the future Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 won't be bothered by supply shortages.
The deal is currently under negotiation, and LG Display is "carefully considering" the proposed investment. The Korean OLED manufacturer has not officially agreed to the contract, but several news networks are monitoring the proposal.
Recently, Apple has ordered millions of OLED panels for its 10th-anniversarry edition iPhone. With that said, LG Display has a strong hand to play in the occurring negotiations with Google.
Aside from assuring that OLED screens won't come short in time for the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL, Google is also reportedly looking to redesign the devices.
Although the Pixel and the Pixel XL were reliable handsets, several critics have hit Google for their designs. Given the criticism, Google might opt for a redesign for the upcoming Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2.
It may be possible that Google will consider curved display since Samsung uses OLED screens for the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. However, this might also be unnecessary since OLED screens also allow subtly curve finishes at the edges of the phone.
