Honor Magic V2 Review: Fabulous Foldable, Though Software Leaves Room for Improvement
Austin JayMost foldable phones often give the impression of carrying a bulkier device due to their design. However, Honor aims to redefine this experience with the Magic V2, emphasizing its slim and lightweight profile, mimicking a standard smartphone until it unfolds.
The Magic V2 primarily lives up to this claim, providing moments when users may mistake it for a conventional smartphone in their pocket. Even though it is a powerful competitor in terms of upscale foldable smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, Google Pixel Fold, and OnePlus Open, there are issues with software polish. The physical body of the gadget is aesthetically attractive because it has integrated a unique design; however, some areas can be improved in terms of software optimization for a more refined and seamless user interface.
Honor is bringing its Magic V2, which retails for £1,699.99, to Europe, where it is expected to compete in the foldable smartphone market. The Magic V2, a competitor of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold has been available in China for over six months. Its remarkable thin and light design allows it to stand out.
The phone weighs 237 grams and has an impressive thickness of 10.1mm when folded. The Magic V2 boasts a 6.43-inch OLED cover display and a 7.92-inch inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
Honor claims durability for the internal display, capable of enduring 400,000 folds, equivalent to around ten years of regular use.
Despite its commendable hardware, the Magic V2 ships with Android 13, requiring an update to Android 14, showcasing a slight drawback in software currency. Honor promises five years of security upgrades and four Android updates, considering the mainstream way.
Driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2, it delivers six gigabytes of memory and has been equipped with no less than 516GB ROM at a similar time - yet there is room for up to one forward-thinking terabyte additional. Although without a charging brick or wireless charging, the Honor Magic V2 seeks to enthrall users with its unique design and helpful specification set.

Utilizing the Magic V2's expansive screen real estate enhances the device's multitasking capabilities, providing an elevated experience compared to conventional smartphones. The large internal display facilitates simultaneous activities, such as streaming a movie, browsing Instagram, and composing emails in floating windows.
Notably, the Magic V2 employs MagicOS 7.2, built on Android 13, introducing intelligent features to enhance multitasking. One notable addition is "Privacy Call," an AI-driven directional sound technology that prevents sound leakage during calls, adjusting audio volume based on the environment to maintain privacy.
Another innovative feature, "Magic Text," reminiscent of the iPhone's Live Text from iOS 15, recognizes text content within images and transforms it into editable text. This functionality adds a layer of convenience for users, aligning with Honor's commitment to integrating intelligent features into Magic V2's user experience. These additions and the device's impressive hardware contribute to its appeal as a versatile and efficient multitasking device.
Honor's Magic V2, although not available in the US, positions itself as a leading foldable phone, especially in the UK, where it's priced at £1,699.99. While its cost is comparable to the Galaxy Z Fold 5, pre-orders via Honor include incentives such as Bang and Olufsen headphones, six months of screen protection, and a 66W Honor SuperCharge Power Adapter. An early-bird voucher is available for a £200 discount until March 1.
The device will be available from Three on February 2, and a Porsche Design version, the Honor Magic V2 RSR, with unique features, is teased for the future.
