Google One Conceals 200GB Plan, Poses Challenges for Subscribers
Austin JayGoogle One recently touched the figure of 100 million subscribers to its cloud storage service, making the tech giant have a sizable user base for its storage plans. With the Gemini Advanced, attention shifts to the tier "AI Premium. There does seem to be some subtle shift as regards to the 200GB storage plan; it no longer seems to take the center stage when it comes to the offer for new account holders.
Previously, Google One featured four primary storage tiers, starting with a 100GB plan at $1.99/month and a 200GB plan at $2.99/month, providing additional perks. The options extended to higher storage tiers, with 2TB at $9.99/month and 2TB with access to "Gemini Advanced" at $19.99/month.
However, recent observations indicate a shift in the availability of the 200GB plan during the account setup process. New users are no longer presented with the 200GB option when subscribing to Google One storage, only being offered the 100GB plan or the two 2TB plans. The absence of the 200GB plan in the initial subscription channels suggests a deliberate move by Google to streamline and emphasize its offerings.
Despite this change, the 200GB plan still exists. Users can subscribe to any of Google's other plans and later upgrade or downgrade to the 200GB option through account settings. While this adjustment may seem confusing to some users, it aligns with Google's recent announcement of a strategic focus on the "AI Premium" tier, represented by Gemini Advanced.
The exact rationale behind this alteration remains unclear, but it appears to align with Google's goal of drawing attention to the advanced AI features in its premium tier. With sign-up/switching flow and recommendation AI-enhanced services in mind, Google tries to direct users to the Google AI products that can be found in the Google One ecosystem.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced that Google One, an all-inclusive subscription service, had reached a noteworthy milestone: 100 million subscribers in a year. The user can benefit from improved services and gain free online storage for Gmail, Drive, or Photos as part of Google One.
This success highlights Google's aim of discouraging people from using free plans, as seen by the removal of limitless photo storage from Google Drive. The trend toward premium products is evident in the addition of Google One to YouTube Premium, which just obtained 100 million members.
Notably, the announcement coincided with the introduction of Google's AI Premium Plan, an advanced offering priced at $200 per year. This plan, building on the existing Google One Premium plan, includes 2TB of storage and features like VPN and dark web monitoring. Users gain access to an enhanced version of Gemini, formerly known as the Bard chatbot, with upcoming integration into services like Gmail and Docs.
However, users should be aware that the AI Premium Plan cannot be subscribed to through Apple's App Store payments, requiring cancellation of any existing plan first. Additionally, it does not support sharing across family groups.
Google's emphasis on premium services aligns with its ongoing efforts to enhance user experiences and offer advanced AI features, marking a significant shift in the company's subscription strategy.
