Windows 8 App Review: Shapzzle

Vamien McKalin

Recent checks of the Windows 8 Store show that developers are supporting the platform with all kinds of games; however, not many of these games are worth playing.

Shapzzle is a puzzle game, a game that will have the player thinking of how to get around a particular level. The game is all about converting objects to a target shape, sounds easy enough right? Well, it is, only for the first couple of levels.

Pros:

  • Challenging
  • Very colorful
  • Randomly created levels
  • Able to use power ups

Cons:

  • Game starts over when app is closed
  • Game starts over when the menu button is pressed after completing a level

Look and Feel

Since this is just a game, players shouldn't expect to come across the Windows 8 design experience. However, that doesn't mean the design is bad, it is very simple to understand with big bold buttons and letters for easy finger navigation.

Gameplay

Shapzzle is a simple game to play, though for some users it may be a little bit confusing to understand at first. The object here is to convert all shapes on the board to the target shape given at the beginning of each level, but make sure at least one target shape is left on the board at the end of the game. Bear in mind that the game gives a player a limited number of attempts to convert all the shapes, so think things through before picking a shape to convert.

Three different power ups in Shapzzle are available, all of which appear to give the user a one-time use. Post that, players will have to purchase each power up for $1.99.

Target Switcher is the name of the first power up and it is used for changing the shape of the target.

Next up, Space Filler. With Space Filler, players can turn a blank space on the board into a chosen shape. This power up is useful when things are getting too difficult to control.

Finally, there is Shape Converter. This power up allows the player to change the shape of any shape on the board.

Performance

The game performed relatively well, no hiccups no slowdowns, nothing to break the player from the experience.

Conclusion

Shapzzle is a decent game, not the best game in the Windows 8 Store; however, it is good for passing the time and for when players want to challenge themselves. Unfortunately, the game is not able to resume from where it once was after the app has been closed, but that's not a huge deal breaker.
