Nokia is off to a good start with the Lumia 920, the company's first flagship Windows Phone 8 device. Reports of the handset selling out almost everywhere it is available, is rampant on the Internet. It could mean the struggling Finnish mobile phone maker could be staging a solid comeback.
Just 20 days ago, Nokia launched the Lumia 920 to eager Windows Phone 8 fans, and to those who are willing to try something different. As it turned out, Nokia began reaping some early success of the device, despite many reviewers claiming the handset was too heavy to carry around for long periods.
Nokia managed to ship 2.5 million units of the Lumia 920. This was a complete order by retailers worldwide. With reports claiming the device has been sold out at many retailers, it is clear by the end of the year, Nokia could potentially sell $3 million units if demands continue to be this high.
Furthermore, with the Lumia 920 making waves, the overall number of Nokia-branded Windows Phone 8 sales before the year ends, could be greater.
Last quarter, only 2.9 million of all Nokia Lumia handsets were sold, which is very disappointing when the total number of handsets in the market is taken into consideration. It is safe to say that the early success of the Lumia 920 lies strongly with Windows Phone 8 and the bump in hardware specifications, along with the PureView camera. This combination makes the Lumia 920 the best Windows Phone 8 device according to many uses and critics. Competing manufacturers need to step it up, or else Nokia could end up cannibalizing Windows Phone for itself, and that's not good for competition.
Take Android for example - the only manufacturer making a solid profit via the platform is Samsung. Everyone else are just scraping the bottom of the barrel for whatever that has been left behind.
