Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has teamed up with Canadian house DJ Deadmau5 once again to launch its latest Lumia handset in the UK.
Wednesday (Nov. 28) night's event, which took place in Flat Iron Square in London's Southwark region, was in celebration of the Lumia 920 - one of the first few smartphones to be running Microsoft's latest Windows Phone 8 operating system.
The event saw Nokia take over the entire square, to create a free open air concert that was kept a secret until the launch, with Nokia competition winners and invited guests in attendance.
Rigged with lights and speakers, organizers created a Lumia-inspired audio visual show using specially developed software, which involved flashing window panes, illuminating graffiti, and giant disco balls.
Nokia teamed up with the DJ in Nov. 2011 for a similar launch of its Lumia 800 Windows Phone 7 handsets featuring a 4D projection on London's Millbank Tower.
"We wanted to do something as innovative as our products to celebrate the launch of the new Nokia Lumia range. The show took its inspiration from the vibrant colors of the range. The Nokia Lumia 920 has extraordinary low light capabilities and we wanted to create an event that would showcase this fantastic feature and still show that our products stand out from the current sea of faceless black handsets," said Adam Johnson, head of consumer marketing at Nokia.
"Playing Millbank Tower was an incredible experience, so it's great to be back in London to team up with Nokia again. The new show was a totally different concept from last year, but equally inspiring and technically challenging," said Deadmau5 aka Joel Thomas Zimmerman.
The Lumia 920, along with the Lumia 820, features the revamped Windows Phone 8 operating system, which Microsoft is hoping will prove to be a serious challenge to the dominant iOS and Android mobile ecosystems.
The 4.5-inch touchscreen device, featuring a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1GB RAM was released in the U.S. on Nov. 2. However, Nokia isn't the only manufacturer with a Windows Phone 8 handset in its inventory.
HTC's Windows Phone 8X was unveiled in September and is due out later this year. It also features a dual-core 1.5GHZ processor with 1GB RAM, but with a slightly smaller 4.3-inch Super LCD 2 touchscreen.
