Nintendo Wii console owners in the UK can now download the LOVEFiLM app to stream video content direct from Amazon.
Those who are already members of the subscription service can download the app from the Wii Shop Channel for free, giving them the ability to search, browse and watch any one of the more than 4,700 titles available on the site. Subscriptions to the service cost £4.99 and both LOVEFiLM and Nintendo promise the app will soon be available for the newly released Wii U console.
"We've designed the application specifically for the Wii, so you can find plenty of fantastic family films & TV shows using either the pointer or the directional-pad on your Wii Remote," said Farah Fahmy, Product Manager for LOVEFiLM. "LOVEFiLM on the Wii has all the great titles that you've come to associate with LOVEFiLM, and it's really easy to use too. Happy Instant Wii viewing!"
LOVEFiLM has over 2 million subscribers and will now gain access to a further 8 million UK Wii owners. The LOVEFiLM app is also available for the Xbox 360, Sony PS3, the Apple iPad, Amazon's own Kindle Fire HD. It will compete alongside NetFlix, which is already available on the Wii, and the company promises and app for the newly launched Wii U console soon.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with LOVEFiLM to offer Wii owners and soon Wii U owners on-demand film and TV content to enjoy," said Shelly Pearce, Marketing & PR Director for Nintendo UK, in a statement widely reported on websites such as Tech Digest. LOVEFiLM has a proven track record of success and innovation in film distribution and is a very welcome addition."
With the launch on Nintendo's console, LOVEFiLM is releasing Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 with Robert Pattinson.
LOVEFiLM recommends customers have a broadband Internet connection speed of at least 2Mbps and says only standard definition titles are available for the Wii because it does not support HD playback. However, there is a possibility that the forthcoming Wii U version of the app will support HD, which is made possible by the new console.
