Galaxy S3 Gets 'Premium Suite': New Features Explained

Khurram Aziz

Samsung is bringing the Premium Suite upgrade to its flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone.

The upgrade comes via the Android v4.1.2 Jelly Bean update, which the South Korean tech giant rolled out last week, and brings features already seen on the Galaxy Note 2 phablet.

Page Buddy

The feature Page Buddy that comes with Premium Suite allows the S3 to predict the future actions of a user by launching relevant actions based on input. For example, if you plug in headphones, the music player starts automatically. There is also a new contextual menu which places the devices most frequently used options closer to the top in the drawer and running apps menu as well as in the listing when you share media and files.

Multi-window feature

Perhaps the most loved and most wanted feature from the Note 2 coming to the S3 with the Premium Suite upgrade is the multi-window function. The multi-window function allows the smartphone to run two applications side-by-side, almost like a desktop PC.

Improved geo-tagging

A new tagging system extends the geo-location feature of the Android camera app with the ability to add details on the date, location and even the weather to any photo you take. It is also now easier to share photos by allowing the Share Shot to pair devices via NFC.

Powerful multimedia

The overall multimedia functionality of the device is also much improved with the Premium Suite upgrade. New features include: Paper Artist - an Instagram like feature which allow you to add effects to pictures you take; Best Face - allowing you to take five pictures in quick succession, allowing you to select the best shot; and Low Light Shot - making the camera better at taking pictures in the dark.

Easy Mode

Easy Mode is for those who are too lazy to search for apps. It allows S3 owners to create a widget of your most frequently used app and place it on the start screen.

Sound Balance

Those looking for more flexibility in the way sound is produced out of the headphones can now change the volume level in each ear separately using sound balance.

The Premium Suite is an update beyond the normal Android update and brings features unique from other Jelly Bean handsets. The update will roll out gradually and, therefore, will not be available all on the markets in the same time.

The build number for the update is "JZOO54K" and is now available OTA. You can manually check to see if the update is available by going to Settings > About Device > Software Update > Check for Updates and see whether the new firmware has rolled out for your device.
