Now that you have an iPhone 5 or new iPod, it's time to start the scavenger hunt for all new accessories to fit Apple's new Lightning connector. Bose and many other companies are starting to create adapters or redesign many of their products. With no significant upgrade to Bose's SoundDock since that of the classic iPod, Bose's new speaker upgrade has been long awaited.
With the release of the Lightning connector for the new iPhone 5 and iPods, Bose's new SoundDock 3 (or SoundDock III) has changed way it connects to the new iDevices, but not the design. Leaving aside the obvious connection change, the SoundDock 3 has changed little, visually. From the remote control to the aux-in jack, everything will be exceptionally familar to previous Bose SoundDock owners.
"The Bose SoundDock III system incorporates a proprietary acoustic design and digital signal processing. The result is accurate, detailed, room-filling sound without increasing the system's width or depth. The SoundDock III system's industrial design is signature Bose, maintaining clean, modern lines, and a sleek, slim profile," a Bose press release stated.
The speaker weighs in about 4.6 lbs and requires an AC hookup for power. Other features such as the aux-in jack offers usability to other devices for clear, rich sound. The speaker, being 12 inches long and just about 7 inches tall, makes a great choice for small areas or a countertop. The SoundDock 3 comes with a remote that puts the power in your hands to control basic Apple functions, including navigation through playlists.
The number of iDevice accessories that are compatible with the new Lightning connector is growing. Harman released the JBL speaker docks a few weeks back and so has Phillips. But if you're looking for a compact speaker with that packs a punch, the Bose SoundDock 3 could be the perfect holiday gift.
Priced around $250, the seemingly familiar and sleek black SoundDock 3 is cheaper than the original model. However, given the lack of innovative design and, more importantly, wireless capability, it will be tough for Bose to battle it out against portable docks made by its rivals.
