Google Maps Takes The No. 1 Spot Among Free iPhone Apps

It didn't take long - Google Maps is already the number 1 application among free iPhone apps. Thanks to the huge Apple Maps fiasco, it came as no surprise that Google Maps would become so popular overnight.

Google Maps took first place among all free applications just mere hours after being released into the Apple App Store. So far the application has garnered over 16,000 reviews, and almost all of them gave the app a 5 star rating. Some even made it known how much it is better than Apple Maps.

The new Google Maps for the iPhone brings back the same great features Apple fans have become accustomed to over the years, but with a cleaner interface that makes it even more easier to use than before.

When it comes to finding a destination, users are no longer required to type it into the phone, they now have the option to speak where they want to go. This is great stuff. Who wants to be driving and typing on their cellphone at the same time? No one except for those who are reckless enough to not care. Other features include the ability to tell Google Maps whether you are driving, walking, or taking the transit. There is also spoken turn-by-turn navigation that was never available in the earlier iPhone version of Google Maps.

iPad users will have to wait a bit longer to get an optimized version for their device. Until then, they can't do much than use what Google has blessed them with.

A few months ago, Google Maps was given the boot out of the App Store after Apple launched iOS 6 with its own Maps application built in. Things didn't go the way Apple would have hoped, and the company was forced to run back to Google to save it from the huge amount of backlash it was getting from its users.

The question is, if and when Apple fixes all the issues with its Maps application, would the company give Google the boot again, or will it keep Google Maps around for good measures?
