Canada's largest telecom services provider, Rogers, began offering its customers the ability to reserve RIM's very first (and unannounced) BlackBerry 10 smartphone today. What makes this move strange is RIM hasn't officially announced or offered any concrete details about their upcoming BlackBerry 10 smartphone. Rogers is only telling customers that the device will be a "BlackBerry 10 all-touch device to be powered by Canada's fastest LTE network" and will be available in early 2013.
This move could bode well for RIM as it might signal increased demand as well as major carrier support for RIM's next generation smartphone and mobile OS. RIM is betting its life on BlackBerry 10 after delaying devices running the next generation OS. RIM was expected to ship devices running BlackBerry 10 by the end of 2012 but had to announce in June that it was going to delay devices until Q1 of 2013.
RIM is expected to announce the first device running BlackBerry 10 at a global unveiling event scheduled for Jan. 30, 2013. The device expected to be announced will be part of the L-Series which will be for all-touch devices (Rogers did confirm the device they are taking reservations for will be a BlackBerry 10 all-touch device), while a later release of devices sporting QWERTY keyboards will be part of the N-Series.
Rumored specs for RIM's first BlackBerry 10 smartphone include a 4.2" screen with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels and 355 ppi (pixels per inch), an 8-megapixel rear camera with auto focus and flash, and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. As far as wireless technologies goes, the device is expected to include NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and LTE radio support. A removable 1800 mAh battery, microHDMI port, microSIM compartment, and a microSD slot are also in the scheme of things.
Rogers is expected to ship the reserved device to customers soon after RIM officially announces the device on Jan. 30, 2013.
