Apple has released a list of the best iOS apps available for its iPhone and iPad for 2012.
The company has chosen Ubisoft's Rayman Jungle Run, a side-scrolling game where players tap to jump and try to collect little flying golden creatures, as its iPhone game of the year. On the iPad, The Room, a 3D mystery puzzle game, won the same accolade.
The full list is available on MacWorld and sees Action Movie FX as the choice for the best overall iPhone app of the year. The app allows users to add Hollywood-style effects to the movies they've shot, and replaces Instagram, which was named iPhone app of the year in 2011.
On the iPad, Paper was named app of the year, beating last year's winner Snapseed. FiftyThree, which created Paper, says the app is optimized for the creative process with functions for writing, drawing, sketching, outlining, and coloring.
In the category of top paid-for apps, the instant messenger WhatsApp, which is challenging SMS as the most popular way of communicating via text on mobile phones, was named best app of 2012. Apple's own word processing offering, Pages, was the most-popular paid-for non-gaming app for the iPad while Rovio's Angry Birds Space was the top-selling games app on both iPhone and iPad.
However, in the category of most downloaded free apps, Google's Maps was conspicuous by its absence. Apple notably dropped the app which used to be the iPhone's default navigation service, when it released the iPhone 5 and the updated version of iOS 6 in September.
Google has since revised its Maps app and released it this month, with reports indicating that it has already been downloaded 10 million times.
YouTube, another Google-owned app which suffered a similar fate, did, on the other hand, make the list as the top free downloaded app in 2012.
