China-based Huawei has confirmed that it will unveil its first-ever Windows Phone 8 smartphone - the Ascend W1 - along with the Android-based Ascend D2 at CES 2013 in January.
The news of the two smartphones making an appearance at CES 2013 was confirmed by Huawei's chairman Yu Chengdong on Chinese microblogging site Weibo.
"We will release a flagship phone Ascend D2 the CES global consumer electronics show in January next year," said Chengdong (translated).
Chengdong also expressed concerns as to whether the Ascend D2 would be able to make an impact in the consumer market, given the competition from existing Android smartphones. Chengdong was also apprehensive of the device's pricing and averred that it may be too expensive.
"You can guess at the D2 compared to competing products unique differentiation leading? I'm worried D2 specifications done too high, the cost is too high, will become super enthusiasts favored Dream Phone?" stated Chengdong on Weibo.
The Ascend D2 is speculated to feature a 5-inch 1080p display, putting it at par with the HTC J Butterfly. Additionally, Samsung, LG, Lenovo, and Sony are all rumored to be working on smartphones that will sport similar displays.
The Android-powered Ascend D2 will likely have a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, making it a strong contender in the smartphone space. By contrast, the Ascend W1 is speculated to be a low-end WP8 device and will likely have a 4-inch display, a1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB storage, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, 2000mAh battery, and 512MB of RAM.
With CES 2013 kicking off soon, it will be interesting to see what devices are in store for 2013.
