Apple is doing some major business in China and now the Cupertino-based company has numbers to back the claim. Apple said it has sold 2.1 million units of iPhone 5 in China in the first three days after its launch on Dec. 14.
The company has also revealed that the new iPhone 5 will be made available in more than 100 countries by the end of December. This will make it the fastest iPhone rollout ever in the history of the company.
“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”
The iPhone 5 went on sale on Thursday in China, and even before people could get their hands on the smartphone, thousands of online reservations were already made for the new Apple smartphone. The device is currently available via carriers China Telecom and China Unicom, although it's still not being offered on China Mobile – the country’s largest carrier – as of now.
Apple will look to achieve the same profit margin with the iPhone 5 in China, as it did with the release of the smartphone in the U.S.
When the device first launched in the U.S. in September, its sales topped five million units over the first weekend, and this was a million higher than the iPhone 4S sales. However, according to analysts at investment bank Canaccord Genuity, per a CNET report “it is expected that Apple will sell 47.5 million iPhones in the current quarter, up from its prior forecast for 45 million. However, estimates for the first quarter of 2013 have been slightly lowered -- now 46 million instead of 47.5 million -- as the earlier-than-expected China launch is most likely pulling sales into this quarter.”
The iPhone 5 is currently the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, and has been completely redesigned to feature an amazing new 4-inch Retina display. The device has an Apple-designed A6 chip for a smoother and faster performance, alongside a fast wireless technology with improved battery life.
The iPhone 5 runs on iOS 6, the newest OS refresh from Apple with over 200 new features including: Shared Photo Streams, all-new Maps app, Passbook organization, and more Siri features and languages, including Mandarin.
