On Christmas Day, millions of people were unwrapping gifts, many of these gifts were smartphones and tablets. Kids and adults alike need instant gratification and that meant installing the most popular game found on iOS and Android. There was one clear choice of what app was going to christen their new gadget on Christmas Day, irrespective of whether it was an iPod touch, Nexus 7, iPad mini, Samsung Galaxy S3, 4th Generation iPad, iPhone 5, Kindle Fire HD, etc. That app turned out to be the cult classic Temple Run.

Keith Shepherd, the founder of Imangi Studios, the company that made Temple Run, posted on his Twitter page that Temple Run saw unprecedented attention on Christmas Day. Temple Run was downloaded more than 1 million times on iOS, more than 1 million times on Android's Play Store and more than 500,000 times on Amazon's Android Appstore during the 24 hour period.
This explains why Temple Run was one of the top free and top grossing apps on Apple's App Store having enjoyed over 40 million downloads and 7 million daily active users. Isn't it great to know as a culture that there really are some things that we can all agree on (well, 2.5 million at least on Christmas Day)? It's a very impressive number of people running around a virtual temple collecting coins, attempting to steal an idol; all while being chased by "demonic monkeys".
