With the CES 2013 knocking at our doorstep, the excitement surrounding the event has reached fever pitch. Several leading smartphone manufacturers are anticipated to unveil a slew of new devices, including LG, and now reports indicate that the Korean company could be on song to take the wraps off the successor of its Optimus G, dubbed the Optimus G2, at the CES 2013.

LG released its 4.7-inch Optimus G just two months ago in Nov. 2012 and with rumors of the 5.5-inch Optimus G2 running amok, the company looks set to take on the smartphone market biggies with its purported phablet offering.

Previously, rumors pointed to a May 2013 release, but a DigiTimes report suggests that the Optimus G2 phablet could be greeting consumers as early as 2013 at the CES.

"South Korea-based LG Electronics plans to showcase the Optimus G2 Android smartphone (at CES 2013), with a 5.5-inch screen, and Qualcomm quad-core S4 Prime MSM8974," reported DigiTimes.

The LG Optimus G2, like most follow-up devices, improves on its predecessor. The phablet will feature a 5.5-inch Full HD 1080p display, a new quad-core Snapdragon Prime processor clocked at 2GHz, and Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. The phablet is rumored to pack in 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, which seems to be the standard for most smartphones that are slated for 2013.

With HTC setting the bar with its Droid DNA, the move to introduce a 5-inch plus smartphone with a 1080p display seems to make business sense for LG, considering other makers like Huawei and ZTE are both expected to launch smartphones which are in the same league at the CES 2013. Samsung and Sony too are believed to be working on the Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z phablets that border on the same specifications.

Where the LG Optimus G2 may have an edge over the other flagship 2013 devices is if it packs in Android 5. Key Lime Pie under the hood, which at this juncture does not seem plausible.

With LG's CES press event slated for Monday, Jan. 7, at 8AM, we have a short wait before all will be revealed. Mobile & Apps will be covering all the action live from CES 2013, so stay tuned!

Updated: LG didn't launch Optimus G2 at CES 2013 and neither did we get to see Samsung Galaxy S4.
