Samsung's purported Galaxy S4 is slated to be the next big thing to hit the consumer market. The Galaxy S4, a follow-up to the Galaxy S3, is expected to make an appearance at the MWC 2013 in February and release by April or May this year.
Samsung is said to have slightly bumped the screen size to 4.99 inches and the Galaxy S4 is also said to have a 1080p display. However, with a gamut of flagship smartphones making their way in 2013 (that sport 5-inch screens with 1080p displays as well), what is it that sets the Galaxy S4 apart from offerings from competitors like Sony, HTC, LG, ZTE, and Huawei to name a few ?
Why should consumers wait for the Galaxy S4, you ask? We give you five reasons why the Galaxy S4 is definitely worth the wait.
1. Flexible Display
Earlier in Dec. 2012, a Reuters report revealed that Samsung was working on an unbreakable screen for its Galaxy S4 smartphone.
"Samsung Electronics, the world's leading technology company by revenue, is likely accelerating the launch of its next-generation flagship Galaxy smartphone - which may come with a breakthrough unbreakable screen," reported Reuters.
Speculations suggest that the Galaxy S4 will feature the "Youm" flexible display which Samsung demoed at the CES 2013. The high resolution display has been made on extremely thin plastic instead of glass and according to Samsung's SVP Brian Berkeley, the bendable display "won't break even if it's dropped."
2. 8-Core Processor
Samsung took the wraps off its Exynos 5 Octa processor at the CES 2013. The new high performance chip will use four Cortex A15 and four Cortex A7 cores, and clocks in at 1.8GHz.
Rumors have been rife that the Galaxy S4 will house the 8-core processor and a recent AnTuTu benchmark result confirmed the same.
3. Better Battery Life
One of the major concerns for any smartphone user is the device's battery life. The Galaxy S3 has a powerful 2100mAh battery and as rumors indicate that the Galaxy S4 will have a powerful 8-core processor, Samsung is likely to pack in a more powerful battery like it did with the Galaxy Note 2.
4. S Pen
While 5-inch smartphones with 1080p displays are quite the trend for 2013, Samsung's Galaxy S4 will have a clear edge over rivals despite sporting the same screen size and resolution.
Galaxy S4 is expected to come with the S Pen stylus, which makes its Galaxy Note 2 phablet stand out from the crowd. If the rumor bears fruition, then the Galaxy S4 will be the first of the smartphones to have a stylus.
5. Track Record
Samsung's Galaxy S line-up has a pretty enviable track record. The original Galaxy S laid the foundation, followed by the Galaxy S2 in 2011, which stepped up things for the Korean company. However, it was the launch of the Galaxy S3 in 2012 that swung things in Samsung's favor, making it the smartphone market leader and a worthy challenger to iPhone.
The Galaxy S3 sold over 30 million units worldwide within six months of its release, surpassing the Galaxy S2 in terms of sales, with ease. The Galaxy S4 will undoubtedly have a benchmark to live up to and big shoes to fill; however, Samsung seems to be clued in on what the consumers want and should have no difficulty in delivering the goods.
Given Samsung's track record with the Galaxy S3, consumers will be waiting eagerly for the next-gen Galaxy S4 to conquer the market and vanquish rival offerings.
