Google's Nexus Q media player has just moved further away from ever being released, as it now appears as "no longer available for sale."
"The first social streaming media player," as Google touted it, the Nexus Q has not made the news in quite some time. Now, after months of silence, the search giant has finally changed the product listing in the Google Play store, but it doesn't bring any good news.
The Nexus Q has never actually sold. It was available for purchase for a while, but not since July. Google apparently wanted to make things a bit clearer, and changed the status of Nexus Q's Google Play listing. Why now is just anyone's guess.
Google stopped offering the Nexus Q a year ago, after complaints that the price was too high for a gadget that ultimately didn't do anything much. Google said it would take it back to the workshop and redesign it. While many hoped that Google would come up with some exciting new functionality and unleash the Nexus Q back on the market soon, months went by without a single update from Google.
The company removed the Nexus Q from the Nexus landing page back in October, seemingly to make room for more exciting devices such as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. The bottom line is that Google never "officially" released the Nexus Q, as the company halted the project before it even left the pre-order phase.
Customers who pre-ordered a Nexus Q received one for free. For everyone else waiting for the device - tough luck. Google also gave away the Nexus Q gadget for free at its Google I/O 2012 conference. In other words, a number of Nexus Q devices are floating around, but none of them were actually sold. The fact that it's no longer available for sale just seems a bit ironic.
The Google Nexus Q was expected to eventually hit the market with a $299 price tag, but it now seems it may never be the case. The first social streaming media player or not, the new Nexus Q may never see the light of day.
