You get to hear a PlayStation 4 (PS4) rumor almost every other day of late, and the latest one was that the next version of the popular gaming device may come without the iconic DualShock controller. Another hot rumor had it that the PS4 will be 50 percent more powerful than Xbox 720.
Now, more specifications about Sony's next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis and its competitor Microsoft Xbox have emerged revealing that both the consoles will feature eight-core CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz. Quoting what it calls "trusted sources," the technically minded and reputable Digital Foundry revealed that the main processors for both the devices will be built around AMD's Jaguar architecture. While these are low-power processor cores made for entry-level tablets and laptops, the new consoles will receive specially customized processors with an overall design overhaul and doubled core counts.
Orbis is speculated to feature a Radeon HD graphics chip. "Running at 850MHz and featuring 20 of AMD's "Graphics Core Next" compute units, our information suggests that Orbis shaves off 10 percent of that number, offering up 18 CUs in total, and sees a mild downclock to 800MHz," the report said.
Though the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will use the same eight-core CPU as the Orbis, the Microsoft game device is rumored to have a much slower memory bank as it reportedly has 8GB of DDR3 compared to Orbis's 4GB of GDDR5. It should be noted that GDDR3 is old and slow comparing to GDDR5, the ultra-fast RAM that is often seen with the latest PC graphics cards. Orbis has a reserved 512MB RAM for the operating system.
According to the report, the AMD CPU offers up the 1.84 teraflops benchmark when combined with a Radeon 7970M.
In a nutshell, the new specs offer as so much info into Orbis or PlayStation 4 as listed out by the Venture Beat including:
- AMD eight-core 1.6GHz CPU
- Radeon HD graphics card (possibly a modified version of the 7970M)
- 1.84 TFLOPS
- "Secret sauce" compute module
- CPU component could be 75 to 80 mm2
- 4GB of GDDR5 ultra-fast RAM
- 512MB RAM reserved for the operating system
- 100GB Blu-ray disc drive
