When Nokia launched its new Windows Phone 8 line-up of Lumia smartphones (i.e. Lumia 620, Lumia 810, Lumia 820, and Lumia 920), one feature that was previously available on pevious Lumia devices was notably missing. This feature, Flip-to-Silence, is now set to make a reappearance on the Lumia 620 if reports are to be believed.
The Flip-to Silence feature, as the name suggests, disables the ringer when users, who do not want to attend to a coming call, turn their phone over. The feature is certainly not a must-have or groundbreaking, but is quite useful for smartphone users.
Why Nokia chose to drop this feature for its WP8 Lumia line-up is anybody's guess. It could have partly been due to the fact that the Lumia 920 has a curved screen, but that does not explain why the other phones like the Lumia 810/820 or Lumia 620 had to give this feature a miss.
However, per a WPCentral report, a new firmware has been spotted for the Lumia 620 on Nokia's servers and hints that the Flip-to-Silence feature is set to make a comeback.
"New firmware found on Nokia's servers for the Lumia 620 hint that this feature is on its way back. The firmware (1030.6402) looks to be still experimental and it is difficult to download but one of our readers did manage to grab the files and flash his Lumia 620," reported the site.
The reader who tipped the site experimented with the new firmware and apparently, the battery life and performance of the Lumia 620 improves post the inclusion of the Flip-to-Silence feature. WPCentral tried to grab and flash the files as well but received errors.
The report suggests that Nokia is "working on porting over some missing features to their Windows Phone 8 series, including DLNA support and flip-to-silence."
Per the report, the DLNA support is expected soon and the Flip-to-Silence feature could also be well on its way.
With the Lumia 620 slated to get the useful feature, it remains to be seen if Flip-to-Silence makes it way to the Lumia 920 and other WP8 Lumia handsets as well.
