The Windows Phone 8 users could be treated with some good news soon.
Per reports, while it is being heavily rumored that Microsoft is set to roll out a set of updates to Windows 8 OS sometime later this year, referred to by the codename Windows Blue, there is a new rumor suggesting that this release might also be fruitful for Windows Phone 8 users as well.
The new update, which could also arrive for Windows Phone 8, is said to bring along a boatload of smartphone-related enhancements. Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet actually got a tip from a "trusted source" stating that the new Blue update could actually be more than just for the Windows 8 operating system.
She heard that Blue could have the possibility to deliver new versions of Mail, Bing, Internet Explorer, Calendar, and some other Microsoft apps. Moreover, it could also include unnamed enhancements to the platform's user experience, alongside tweaks that could improve the phone's performance and increase its battery life.
"Blue also is the way Microsoft is referring to the next substantial platform update for Windows Phone, the Windows Services (like SkyDrive, Hotmail, etc.), and Windows Server, according to my source. In other words, Blue is a wave of product refreshes which are not expected to arrive exactly all on the same day, but which are meant to be released more or less around the same time," the report states.
It also says that before these various Blue updates arrive for the users, there will be continued rolling out of minor fixes, firmware updates and other new features for Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Services and Windows Phone. "On the phone side of the house, for example, the first minor update, codenamed Portico, already has made its way out to a number of Windows Phone users."
However, there is still no specific word or date as to when these updates will start rolling out and what new features will be arriving with the new Blue updates. "But tweaks to the user experience, new dev-platform related bits, as well as new versions of Internet Explorer, Mail, Calendar, Bing and other integrated apps are likely to figure into the Blue picture, my source said."
Blue is also said to include some important kernel and driver updates which could arrive as a boost to the battery life and general performance, although at the moment, the priority seems to be the backward compatibility with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
