The Apple vs. Samsung battle just got a little bit more interesting, as Nokia has chosen to join with Apple in trying to have Samsung products prohibited from sale. A judge previously ruled against Apple in its quest to have 26 Samsung devices banned.
Apple has chosen to appeal the ruling, and in doing so, gained an unlikely ally in Nokia. The Finnish giant filed a brief to the U.S. court in support of Apple, hoping to sway Judge Lucy Koh in favor of having the 26 Samsung devices banned. Nokia also warned that failure to ban Samsung devices "could cause wide-ranging damage to the United States patent protection landscape."
"Nokia has recently been involved in numerous U.S. patent lawsuits, as both a plaintiff and defendant. Nokia is thus both a significant patent owner that might seek an injunction to protect its patent rights, and a manufacturer in an industry in which patent owners routinely issue threats of injunctions for patent infringement," according to Nokia's attorney Keith Broyles from Alston & Bird.
Back in 2009, Nokia sued Apple, claiming the iOS factory infringed on 10 Nokia patents with its iPhone device. Because of this, it is quite interesting to see Nokia doing Apple a favor, although sometimes it is necessary to join with one enemy to take down a bigger enemy.
This is the first time a company has come to the aid of Apple in its court battles against Samsung. We wonder if this move could bring both companies closer or if Nokia is only looking out for its own back-end.
One thing is certain: Samsung has a fight on its hands with these two joining forces.
