Apple's latest smartphone, the iPhone 5, is definitely a hot device, but in one recent case, it was literally hot — and smoking.
For Suwicha Auesomsaksakul, an iPhone 5 user in Thailand, the smartphone proved to be quite explosive. According to the user, he was 30 seconds into a phone call when his two-month-old handset started to really heat up and emit smoke.
"The phone exploded four times like a firecracker" after the unlucky handset owner threw the smoking device to the ground, according to Thai news site Coconuts Bangkok. Meanwhile, another Thai news site called MCOT.net even posted a video of the "grisly iPhone 5 remains."
After the smoking incident, the high-end smartphone sported a stunning Retina display separated from the chassis, as well as a warped Home button. Suwicha told MCOT.net that he only bought the latest Apple smartphone two months ago, but after this unfortunate incident he will refrain from using the company's products.
While such incidents may be isolated, this is not the first time that an exploding iPhone makes the news. In 2011, an iPhone 4 was reportedly glowing red and emitting smoke, and in 2012 security footage allegedly captured an iPhone of an unclear model exploding in a man's pocket.
On the other hand, such isolated occurrances don't seem to be much of a turnoff for Apple fans, and it's highly unlikely that people will refrain from buying Apple products altogether. Except for Suwicha, of course, who doesn't want anything to do with iDevices anymore.
News of exploding Apple devices can't make for good marketing, but the fact that they are such rare occurrences means most people are not discouraged from investing hefty amounts of money in Apple products. A small percentage of potential buyers may think twice before making such an acquisition, but most Apple fans just read the news and think no more of it.
The iPhone 5 is a very popular device that generated great sales worldwide. But it seems, however, not all iPhone users are equally fortunate, and some get handsets hotter than they bargained for. Will the rumored iPhone 5S have similar explosive surprises?
