Samsung has a solution for those who want a high-end smartphone but worry about breaking it: a rugged version of the Galaxy S4.
Many dream about a high-end handset but can't afford it. Others, meanwhile, could afford to buy one, but fear they'd just pay money for nothing because they'd break it in a heartbeat. We've all heard stories about smartphones dropped into the toilet, with cracked screens from bumps, or broken altogether due to some mysterious fall.
While clumsiness is not a virtue, Samsung is aware that accidents do happen (to some more than others), and aims to ease such concerns with a rugged version of its Galaxy S4 flagship.
According to Tech View, Young Soo Kim, president of Samsung Gulf, said a waterproof version of the new Samsung Galaxy flagship is just weeks away from making its debut. Kim's comments came in response to a question during a Q&A session after Samsung announced its Galaxy S4 in the region.
The new Sony Xperia Z, for instance, grabbed everyone's attention during this year's International CES for its water- and dust-resistance feature. Many recent Motorola smartphones also got a P2i treatment and can withstand a spill or some water. Waterproof smartphones could be far more valuable than they already are, and it has to be a trend. With P2i, instead of having the phone owner pay for and apply a waterproof coating, the manufacturer is the one supporting the costs and the device comes with water resistance out of the box.
Considering that such features are no longer a surprise, it's only natural that people wondered why Samsung didn't move in this direction with its popular Galaxy smartphones. Apparently Samsung did think of it, and this rugged Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the proof.
On the other hand, as nice as it all sounds, this is the first time that a rugged Samsung Galaxy handset is making news. The wildly popular Samsung Galaxy S3 did not have such a version, and no other reports heralded the arrival of a rugged S4 model.
A lot of questions still remain about this purported rugged Galaxy S4, such as pricing, launch date or which markets will get to see it. The news does, however, bring hope for all those clumsy people dreaming of the high-end Galaxy S4, but are afraid they'd drop it the second they buy it.
