Hotmail is now officially gone, as Microsoft has finally completed the shift from Hotmail to Outlook.com, and now everyone is on the same page. The next time you log into your Hotmail account, it will look modern and more user-friendly.
The Outlook.com blog says over 400 million users are now using the service, and that it has migrated over 150 petabytes of data in the space of six weeks. That's not all: to celebrate this milestone, Outlook.com has some new features, in the form of SMTP and more advanced SkyDrive integration.
SMTP allows Outlook.com users to send email directly from another email account's SMTP server. Recently, Outlook.com supported the "send on behalf" feature, but it was a pain to use for most users; hence the reason Microsoft is making the change.
"Today, we're excited to announce that we've completed upgrading all Hotmail customers to Outlook.com. Coupled with the growing organic excitement for Outlook.com, this has pushed us to over 400 million active Outlook.com accounts, including 125 million that are accessing email, calendar and contacts on a mobile device using Exchange ActiveSync. We're also pleased to announce that we're adding two new features to Outlook.com: SMTP send, so it's easier to send mail from different email addresses, and deeper integration with SkyDrive," says the Outlook.com blog.
SkyDrive integration has always been a feature of Outlook.com, but it wasn't deeply sewn in. With the new deeper integration features, it is now possible to select content from your SkyDrive folders right from Outlook.com and compose email to send as attachments. This is great stuff, and everything is much easier now, but there needs to be more.
Thankfully, Microsoft is working on new SkyDrive-related features; however, the company has not revealed what those are.
