Unlike some PC vendors, Acer doesn't foster bad omens for Microsoft and the Windows platforms. Despite the slow start to Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, Acer President Jim Wong said Microsoft's mobile platform could eventually catch up with Google and Apple.
Jim Wong made this statement in an interview with Bloomberg at a conference where Acer announced several new Windows 8-based products. However, despite the president's thoughts on Microsoft's future in mobile, not a single Windows Phone 8 device was announced by Acer.
He believes the main thing holding back the Windows Phone platform is its lack of applications, compared to Android and iOS. If Microsoft should have someone rectify that problem, then the platform could become a true contender, one that could pose a problem for both Google and Apple in the long run.
"Windows for now is still a leader in the productivity field," Wong said, referring to Microsoft's dominance in PCs and office software. Within the next year, the mobile version of the software is poised to mount a real challenge, he said. "We have high hopes."
Currently, the PC market is in decline, and Microsoft has yet to make a smooth transition to mobile devices such as tablets and phablets. We've seen multiple tablets from several PC vendors; however, only the Surface line of Windows 8 tablets from Microsoft is making an impact, a very small impact. If something doesn't change soon, then Microsoft can kiss the PC and mobile market goodbye.
All is not yet lost however, for Microsoft is busy working on Windows 8.1. This new version of Microsoft's new operating system is rumored to bring support for smaller displays, so expect a 7-8-inch Windows 8-based tablet in not too long. Furthermore, there's Windows Phone 8.1, which is rumored to bring support for 5-inch screen devices, which means phablets are on the horizon.
Microsoft is definitely making the right moves, but it all comes down to the execution: it needs to be perfect.
