In May, Apple released the 16GB version of its iPod touch with a price tag lower than the 32GB and 64GB versions. The price is sweet but before you grab one, be warned, it has ts own share of downsides.
The 16 GB version of the iPod touch lacks the rear-facing camera and the wristband loop. At the same time, Apple retained the Retina display and the dual-core A5 processor in the device to keep the performance of the music player intact.
The latest teardown of the new iPod touch performed by iFixit reveals that Apple hasn't changed much inside the new device.
The places where the iSight camera and the wrist strap loop are located in the other two models have been left empty in the 16GB version.
The absence of the rear-facing camera does lead to some cable rerouting and it also makes space for the rear-facing microphone that has been moved to top in the newly released iPod touch.
iFixit is of the view that the move of doing away with the wrist strap is something targeted to bring down the cost of the device as Apple will not have to spend on cutting a hole in the rear case.
Integrated circuits found on the logic board include:
* Apple A5 dual-core processor, with 512 MB of Mobile DDR2 RAM.
* Toshiba THGBX2G7B2JLA01 128 Gb (16GB) NAND flash
* Apple 3381064 dialog power management IC
* Murata 339S0171 Wi-Fi module
* Broadcom BCM5976 touchscreen controller
* STMicroelectronics low-power, three-axis gyroscope (AGD4/2305/O2LBV)
Apart from these limited number of changes, the 16GB version of the fifth generation iPod touch is identical to its bigger siblings. When it comes to reparability, the new iPod touch also gets a lower reparability rank like its earlier version - iFixit has given the new iPod touch 3 points for reparability with 10 being easiest to repair.
The 16GB version of the iPod touch is priced at $229 on Apple's online store. The fourth generation iPod touch is slightly cheaper at $199 but saving $30 means a slower performance as the older device is powered by A4 processor.
