The massive Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 finally makes its way to retailers in the U.S. as an unlocked device, but sports quite a hefty price tag.
Samsung officially announced its new Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 devices back in April and since then various reports tried to nail down which carriers or retailers will sell it and when. Although big carriers such as AT&T are yet to confirm whether they will offer the phablets or not, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is now shipping to the U.S.
While it's good news that the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is shipping, the fact that carriers did not make any announcement so far means that potential buyers need to prepare for a serious investment. The device may come with some neat specs and features, but the unlocked version will draw a big hole in your pocket.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is available unlocked, which means it is contract-free, therefore unsubsidized. To get to the point, interested buyers will have to shell out no less than $595 for the unlocked device.
That's how much Expansys is charging for the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 with GSM support on the 850/900/1800 and 1900 bands and HSDPA. Unlocked Mobiles, meanwhile, slaps an even heftier price tag for the device in the UK, selling the Samsung Galaxy mega 6.3 for £498.97 ($777.20) excluding VAT.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 sports a massive 6.3-inch 720p display, as the name suggests, as well as a dual-core 1.7GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1.9-megapixel front shooter and a 3,200 mAh battery to support its huge screen. The device comes with 8GB of internal storage capacity, expandable via micro SD. The phablet will run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean topped with Samsung's own TouchWiz user interface and will have full access to the Google Play store.
With such a huge display, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is anything but little and again pushes the boundaries of display size. It's the largest super-sized phone so far, but who else to make such a large phablet if not Samsung? If you're a fan of large devices and your budget allows you to shell-out nearly $600 for this unlocked, unsubsidized, SIM-free device, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is up for grabs. If not, U.S. carriers should make an announcement soon and offer the device for a reasonable subsidized price on the usual two-year contract agreement.
