Amid lots of rumors, leaks and speculations, the highly-anticipated Sony Honami makes a more official appearance at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The official documentation for the upcoming Honami smartphone is already available online, but parts of it are currently protected by a short-term confidentiality request. The expiration date for that request is the end of September, which suggests the Sony Honami may make its debut sometime around that period.
The items protected by the confidentiality request include the user manual, setup photos, as well as both internal and external photos. The Sept. 30 expiration date indicates the handset's potential launch date, but it doesn't guarantee that the Sony Honami will actually hit stores on or around that date.
"These items contain proprietary information related to the design of the product which has not yet been released to the market. The public disclosure of this information prior to public launch may be harmful to Sony Mobile Communications AB and provide unjust benefits to its competitors," explains the short-term confidentiality request letter. A period up to 2013-09-30 is requested to protect this information before formal market launch. If the launch date is re-scheduled to be earlier than 2013 Sony Mobile Communications AB will inform again to cancel this restriction."
In other words, there is a possibility that Sony will decide to launch its Honami handset earlier than Sept. 30, in which case the company will cancel this confidentiality restriction.
While the FCC complies and doesn't reveal any "proprietary information," the Sony Honami, or Xperia i1, has had its fair share of rumors and leaks, painting a pretty clear picture of what to expect. Although the FCC documents mention the name Honami several times, that's just a product code name and not the actual commercial name. The device is expected to make its debut as the Sony Xperia i1.
The FCC documentation further notes that the upcoming Sony smartphone will feature Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0, as well as LTE support for bands 2,4,5 and 7 in the U.S. The FCC reveals little else, but the Sony Honami is expected to sport a 50inch Full HD Triluminos display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM and a 3,000 mAh battery. The handset will also reportedly come with a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of internal storage and ship with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on board.
