The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch was rumored to make its debut at the IFA show in Berlin and a company executive has now confirmed it.
The Samsung executive did not only confirm that the company is indeed gearing up to launch its very own smartwatch, but confirmed that the Galaxy Gear will become official on Sept. 4 at the IFA 2013 in Berlin.
Samsung Mobile's executive vice president Lee Young-Hee has confirmed this information to the Korea Times (via Android Beat), saying that the Android smartwatch is ready to debut next week. The executive also noted that the gadget will not use a flexible display as rumored at one point.
Young-Hee did not provide any additional information regarding Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Gear, which means that it's still unclear at this point whether the gadget will sport a regular version of Android or some tweaked, customized build.
Considering that a smartwatch has a small screen, Samsung will likely pack its Galaxy Gear with a heavily customized version of Android, specifically designed to run certain apps that tie it to an Android smartphone. It also remains unknown for now how big the screen will be or what processor the smartwatch will be using. Previous reports claimed that the Galaxy Gear will be able to surf the Web and even make calls, but it's not confirmed.
Samsung is not the only one gearing up to launch a smartwatch, but with a Sept. 4 it seems that the company managed to get an edge, launching its wearable tech before archrival Apple introduces its iWatch.
As expected, the next-generation Samsung Galaxy phablet, the Galaxy Note 3, will also make its debut on Sept. 4, Young-Hee further confirmed. The specs and details of the upcoming phablet are unconfirmed for now. The Galaxy Note 3 is expected to boast a massive Full HD screen, a stylus, 4G connectivity and quad-core Snapdragon 800/octa-core variants.
With Sept. 4 just around the corner, however, it will all become official soon enough. It remains unclear whether Samsung has anything else in tow for IFA 2013, other than the Galaxy Note 3 and the much-rumored Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
