HTC phones are well-known for their quality build and durability, and in this case one HTC smartphone took a bullet and saved its owner's life.
A gas station clerk owes his life to his smartphone, as the handset stopped the bullet from piercing the man's torso.
A Hess gas station in Winter Garden was the target of a robbery a few days ago. According to Winter Garden police, an armed man entered the Hess gas station on West Colonial Drive at around 4:45 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28. First the man asked a clerk to help him find a certain beverage, then pulled out a revolver and ordered the clerk to open the safe. The worker was unable to open it. A second clerk entered the scene and was demanded to do the same, but failed to open the safe as well.
The suspect fired a single round just as he was leaving the store, hitting one of the clerks. The victim hadn't even realized he'd been shot until the police arrived. When he started complaining of chest pain, a closer examination revealed that he had been shot, but his phone took the bullet for him.
"The clerk said, 'I feel like my chest hurts.' That's when medical personnel started looking at him, realized the guy had actually shot at him, hit him, and the cell phone had stopped the bullet," said Winter Garden Police Lt. Scott Allen, as cited by CNN affiliate Wesh.
The cell phone in question was an HTC Evo 3D and, as you can see in the first image above, its screen was completely shattered by the bullet.
"I've seen individuals get shot with low-caliber handguns and I've seen it be life ending. So for this gentleman to be as lucky as he is, it's a good day for us," Lt. Scott Allen added.
The victim was taken to the hospital but was released shortly after being checked out. The second clerk was unharmed.
Upon learning about this incident, HTC was happy to send a care package to the gas station clerk whose life was saved by one of the company's smartphones. The package included an HTC One smartphone, a car dock, a mobile charger, a carry bag, and a mug with one of the hobgoblins from the company's recent ads.
"If anybody deserves a new #HTCOne, it's this guy," tweeted HTC. "Enjoy the 'Glad you're OK' care package."
If the clerk wasn't happy with HTC before, he surely will be from now on. A live-saving HTC Evo 3D and a brand new HTC One flagship to make up for it? Someone must be feeling pretty lucky.
