Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update officially rolling out OTA

Alexandra Burlacu

Samsung has reportedly started to roll out the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for its Galaxy S3, and this time it's the official firmware.

Only the GT-I9300 model has reportedly started receiving the upgrade so far, but other models of the Galaxy S3 should get the new Jelly Bean flavor soon as well.

The Galaxy S3 is Samsung's flagship smartphone from last year. The Galaxy S4 may have taken its place, but plenty of people still use the previous iteration. The Samsung Galaxy S3 still has a lot to offer in terms of specs, features and performance, but it has been stuck on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for quite some time, just like the Galaxy Note 2.

Samsung previously promised to skip the 4.2 build and update the smartphone straight to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and it now seems that the company has made good on its promise. No changelog is currently available, but SamMobile has listed the new features and improvements the update will bring to the table.

Keep in mind that this update is the official firmware rolling out from Samsung, not the unofficial test build that leaked the other day.

According to SamMobile, the core user interface is now on par with the one found on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, although the launcher and widgets remain unchanged. A new lockscreen, however, will bring support for multiple widgets, as well as an adjustable clock size and a personal message.

Samsung reportedly failed to include its Knox security suite with this update, but the feature is expected to become available in a future release. The new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean firmware will now allow users to move things to the SD card, an option Galaxy S3 owners have long been waiting for.

Other notable additions include actionable notifications, Galaxy Gear support, a new S-Voice app, new screen modes, Daydream, driving mode, a new Sound and Shot camera mode, full-screen Samsung apps, new additions in Notifications Center, and many more.

The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean firmware for the Samsung Galaxy S3 is rolling out over the air (OTA) and reportedly weighs in at roughly 1GB. The update will roll out gradually, but should reach all GT-I9300 devices soon.
