The new Motorola Moto G is expected to hit the U.S. early next year and new FCC filings now show that T-Mobile may be among the carriers.
Motorola has recently unveiled its budget Moto G at a press event in Brazil and said that the handset will launch in the U.S. in early 2014.
The Moto G has a 4.5-inch 720p display, a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. The smartphone comes with Android 4.3 on board, but is set to get an update to the latest Android 4.4 in January 2014. The pocket-friendly Moto G will cost just $179 off-contract.
Verizon Wireless has already announced that it will carry the Moto G when it becomes available in the U.S., but no other carriers have announced plans for the handset so far. According to new FCC filings, however, it now seems that T-Mobile will carry the Moto G as well.
Two new FCC filings (1, 2) show two devices with nearly identical ID numbers. One of the filings submitted by Motorola is for a device supporting GSM bands 850/900/1900/2100. There are also three very similar model numbers for this particular filing.
The other approved FCC filing, meanwhile, shows the aforementioned GSM bands, but also support for WCDMA bandwidths 850/1700/1900. A total of five model numbers appear across the two filings, all beginning with XT103 and followed by 2,3,4,5, or 6.
While the actual Moto G brand does not appear anywhere, the smartphone's model number for the UK version is XT1032. This would suggest that all five numbers refer to different versions of the same device.
Based on the FCC filings, it seems that Motorola has submitted a T-Mobile compatible Moto G for testing with the FCC. The model number for this Moto G version will likely be either XT1034 or XT1036.
While these new FCC filings are promising, they are no guarantee that Motorola will actually release a T-Mobile version of the Moto G in the U.S. The only thing that's certain for now regarding the Moto G's U.S. launch is that Verizon is ready to carry the handset.
Other carriers, including T-Mobile, are yet to make an official announcement regarding their plans for the new Motorola Moto G, but more information is expected to surface shortly. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.
