Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system currently lacks a File Manager, but it now seems that this is about to change.
The Windows Phone platform has come a long way and its popularity is growing, especially after Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 Update 3 that finally brought support for large-screen devices and better hardware specifications, including faster processors such as the latest Snapdragon 800 CPU from Qualcomm.
For those using Windows Phone 8 devices, however, one frustrating aspect was the absence of a File Manager to make things easier to handle. Users have voiced their requests and Microsoft apparently listened.
Some WP users took to Microsoft's UserVoice website for Windows Phone and requested a File Manager. The rrequest got a good response, as an Admin said the feature is no longer out of reach.
"This feature is now available in Windows Phone 8," wrote the admin. "And as always, if you think this feature or any other feature needs improvement be sure to create new product suggestions so we can track them all and other users can vote on your ideas. And while we can't promise to ship every suggestion that gets submitted, we will be sure that our product development team receives your feedback. We're always listening!"
Based on this response, it's safe to assume that Microsoft is working on adding this feature to its OS, but it remains unclear for now just how it will implement it. The company may push it out to devices as an OS update, or it may choose to release it as a standalone application.
The Windows Phone 8 Update 3 is expected to see a wide rollout for various devices starting in January, along with the Lumia Black update for Nokia smartphones. Microsoft may opt to include the File Manager in its GDR3 rollout. Otherwise, the feature may reach WP8 devices either with a future GDR4 update or when Windows Phone 8.1 launches.
Microsoft has yet to offer a detailed statement in this regards, but the company is expected to offer more information in the coming weeks. In the meantime, one thing's for sure: Windows Phone 8 is finally getting a File Manager.
