Google's latest Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system is fairly new, but a new version of the platform is reportedly in the works already and will hit devices shortly.
While a slew of Android smartphones are still stuck on older versions of the OS, Android 4.4 KitKat is currently running on 1.1 percent of all Google-powered devices. Nexus gadgets and some other select smartphones have already received the new treat, and are reportedly set to get the 4.4.1 version of the platform soon.
According to a new report from 9to5Google, the publication has uncovered new analytics that reveal the updated KitKat version. Android 4.4.1 KitKat is in the works and is apparently running on a number of devices already, including the Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7. The Google Nexus 10 is not listed in this chart, but it's most likely invited to the party as well. The Nexus experience means getting updates before other devices, and there's no reason why it wouldn't apply to the Nexus 10.
When it comes to non-Nexus devices, a handful of other smartphones and tablets are getting the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS. The Google Play editions of the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 are among the select devices to get the new firmware, along with the Moto X.
Well-known tipster @LlabTooFeR has recently revealed that the HTC One Google Play Edition will receive the new Android 4.4.1 KitKat as well, which means that the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition can't be far behind. The two smartphones got the OTA for Android 4.4 KitKat on the same day, so they should receive the new update around the same time.
Android 4.4 KitKat is expected to make its way soon to a number of other devices, including the original HTC One, the LG G2, Sony's high-end smartphones and its Tablet Z, the Huawei Ascend P6, and others. It remains unclear at this point, however, just when these devices will get a taste of the new Android OS.
Google has yet to make any official announcement regarding its Android 4.4.1 KitKat version, but we'll keep you up to date as soon as we receive confirmation.
