Apple is reportedly planning to release a 12.9-inch iPad in October 2014, while a larger-screen iPhone may debut even sooner, in May 2014.
A larger-size iPad has been rumored for quite some time now. Just last month, a report surfaced claiming that Apple supplier Quanta Computer was charged with mass-producing the much-rumored larger iPad for late 2014.
According to a new report from Digitimes, Apple is looking to release the purported 12.9-inch iPad in October 2014, with the North American educational market in mind. The same report also states that the company is looking at the possibility of replacing the 11-inch MacBook Air with the upcoming larger iPad.
"Apple's large-size tablet will be manufactured by Quanta Computer, and was originally expected to adopt either 12.9- or 13.3-inch panels, with recent rumors indicating that 12.9-inch has a better chance to be picked, the sources noted," reads the new Digitimes report.
The publication further claims that Apple plans to launch a larger-size iPhone as well, and is looking to release it in May 2014. The company will reportedly use a 20nm processor manufactured by TMSC. There have been various reports hinting at a larger-sized iPhone over the past year, and the move would make sense. Apple's archrival Samsung is seeing great demand for its large smartphones and phablets, and it has become clear that many consumers enjoy big devices.
On the other hand, a May 2014 release for the next-generation iPhone sounds a bit odd, especially considering Apple's release cycle for new products. The company has launched its new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in September, and the latest reports have pointed to a late 2014 launch for the larger-screen iPhone. A late 2014 timeframe would fall in line with the October 2011 release of the iPhone 4C, the September 2012 launch of the iPhone 5S, and the September 2013 release of this year's iPhones.
Keep in mind, however, that none of this is confirmed so far, which means that everything's in the rumor state at this point. Apple has not announced any plans to launch larger-screen iPads or iPhones, and it is always advisable to take all leaks, rumors and reports with a grain of salt until official confirmation.
