Nokia Normandy, purportedly the company's first Android smartphone, has leaked online in a new image from a trusted source.
Rumors about a Nokia phone running Google's popular Android operating system have been making rounds for a good while, and the purported smartphone recently leaked with the codename "Normandy."
While Nokia has yet to confirm plans for an Android smartphone, the rumor mill is once again buzzing with excitement about the Normandy.
Trusted tipster @evleaks, who has proved to be reliable countless times in the past when revealing unannounced plans or products, has now posted a render showing Nokia's alleged Android smartphone. The image shows the Nokia Normandy in several color options.
"Nokia Normandy, 2013," reads @evleaks' brief tweet for the leak, suggesting that Nokia might unveil its alleged Android smartphone by the end of the year. If this is true, an announcement should arrive any day now, as 2013 is nearing its end.
It's worth noting that @evleaks' Twitter account went private following this unveiling, and any attempt to "follow" the tweeter will now be pending for approval.
Based on the newly-leaked render of the Nokia Normandy, the purported smartphone seems to sport a design similar to Nokia's Asha range of devices. The image shows a physical 'back' button on the front panel of the smartphone, while the rear panel shows the camera and the Nokia logo in the middle. If this leaked render proves to be accurate, the Nokia Normandy will launch in no less than six color options: Black, Cyan, Red, Mint Green, Yellow, and White.
Earlier reports have claimed that Nokia has been working on a customized, forked version of Android for its Normandy, similarly to how Amazon used a forked Android version for its Kindle Fire tablet range. Those reports pointed to a 2014 launch date for the Nokia Normandy.
Keep in mind, however, that Nokia has announced no plans to launch an Android smartphone, and currently the company is still committed to Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile OS. Such leaks and reports regarding a Nokia Normandy smartphone may very well be just the manifestation of many consumers' desire to see an Android smartphone from the Finnish company.
Consequently, as reliable as @evleaks may have proved to be in the past, we'll still have to file this new Nokia Normandy leak in the rumor category for now.
