With CES 2014 ready to kick off, Samsung has announced its new Smart Home platform, which is designed to connect various electronic devices in a household.
The new Samsung Smart Home Platform will allow users to connect their smartphones, tablets, Smart TVs, and home appliances such as a fridge or washing machine all together for easier management through a single application.
"With Samsung Smart Home, we are bringing our capabilities as the world's number-one manufacturer of smart devices to make the connected home a reality for consumers today," Wonpyo Hong, President of Media Solutions Center at Samsung Electronics, said in the press release on Sunday, Jan. 5.
"In the coming days, we will continue to roll out better home services to our customers to enable them to keep enjoying a brand-new experience of 'Smart Living and Beyond'."
The new Samsung Smart Home will include three main service features at first, allowing users to control their devices anytime, from anywhere. These three initial features are Device Control, Home View, and Smart Customer Service.
Device Control will allow users to use customized settings on their mobile devices or Smart TV and easily control other devices within their household, such as turning on air conditioning or activating lighting. Users will be able to control one of multiple devices simultaneously with the simple touch of the dedicated Smart Home app icon, regardless of their location.
Moreover, Smart Home also includes a voice command function. For instance, if the owner says "going out" to his Galaxy Gear smartwatch, all home lighting and selected appliances will be automatically turned off. Uttering "good night" to their Smart TV remote control, meanwhile, will turn off the TV and dim the lights, gradually turning them off.
The initial deployment of Samsung's new Smart Home will include a range of Samsung Smart TVs, home appliances, and smartphones. In time, the company will gradually expand its coverage and include more Samsung products, as well as devices and appliances from other manufacturers.
For now, Samsung has developed a dedicated Smart Home software protocol (SHP), which aims to enable connectivity between all Samsung Smart Home products, as well as products from other manufacturers.
The company will roll out its new Samsung Smart Home platform to various devices in the first half of this year. For more details, check out Samsung's press release (link in third paragraph).
