Apple released its new MacBook Air with improved battery performance at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2013.
The new MacBook Air features slight changes if we compare the latest Macbook Air with the one that was launched last year. The 13-inch version comes with a microSD card reader, one USB 3.0 port and a Thurerbolt port at its right side just like its predecessor. However, when it comes to the left side, it has one MagSafe 2 port, one USB 3.0 port, one 3.5 mm audio jack and two microphone slots.
The 2012 MacBook Air came with only one microphone slot.
When iFixit removed the outer cover to have a look at what all has been changed inside, the teardown expert found some major changes such as battery, heat sink clamp and SSD module.
The new MacBook Air comes with a larger battery. Apple moves from earlier 7.3 V 6700 mAh battery to 7.6 V 7150 mAh battery, that is going to support the new MacBook Air in giving 12 hours of battery performance.
The improved battery performance doesn't depend only on the larger battery, however. The new OS X 10.9 Mavericks' App Nap and Intel's new Haswell processor also have roles to play.
To make the flash storage of the new MacBook Air, Apple has turned to its smartphone rival Samsung and switched to PCIe from SATA. The earlier model of the MacBook Air was using Toshiba SATA module. PCIe can achieve rates of up to 800MB/s, while SATA is limited to about 600MB/s.
iFixit has given the new MacBook Air only 4 reparability points that indicates that the new laptop will be little tough to repair.
At the same time, the MacBook Air also loses points in upgradability as the RAM is soldered to the logic board and cannot be upgraded.
