Barnes & Noble's Nook Simple Touch GlowLight is considered one of the best e-readers around and the company has now announced a $20 price cut.
Many believe the Nook Simple Touch GlowLight is the best e-reader currently available on the market due to its form and screen, but also its attractive price tag.
Barnes & Noble has now announced an even more enticing price tag for the slate, offering the GlowLight for just $99.
For the sake of comparison, the ad-supported Amazon Kindle Paperwhite e-reader costs $199 while the Kobo Glo sports a $129.99 price tag.
The timing of this new price cut falls in line with Barnes & Noble's previous timetables for such promotions. The company has historically offered discounts before or during the back to school shopping season, while also announcing new products around the same time. Amazon, meanwhile, tends to hold out until the fall to unveil new models or offer discounts on existing products.
For those unfamiliar with the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch GlowLight, the e-reader sports a front-lit screen dubbed GlowLight, hence the name, which emits a somewhat different glow compared to traditional backlighting. Users believe this glow is more pleasant and easier on the eyes, but it does take its toll on battery life. On the other hand, even with the battery life cut in half, it still lasts for two months.
With the new $99 price tag for the Nook Simple Touch GlowLight, Barnes & Noble aims to make e-readers more affordable and set new standards in this area. Compared to non-lit e-readers, front-lit screens are said to offer a better reading experience and a discount should make the device more accessible, thus boosting sales and undercutting rivals.
While Barnes & Noble's discount for the slate falls in line with common back to school offerings, it may also signal that the company is getting ready to launch new Nook e-readers.
The bookseller is giving some hard competition to rival Amazon, but lower prices alone will likely not suffice. Barnes & Noble will need new models in order to stay competitive and this price cut suggests that new e-readers may make their debut soon.
