Microsoft has announced pricing and availability details for the UK launch of its 4G-enabled Surface 2, the second-generation Microsoft tablet that runs Windows RT.

The company's original Surface RT, launched in 2012, mostly failed to attract customers and see a relevant adoption. It was the first time consumers were experiencing Windows RT, a watered-down version of Windows, and many found it too confusing and not efficient enough. The Surface RT was largely deemed a failure, but instead of giving up the company decided to go forward and launch a new and improved version. The Surface 2 is the second-generation tablet running Windows RT, this time version 8.1, and sports some notable improvements over its predecessor.

The latest versions of Microsoft's Windows tablets from last year are now ready to hit more regions worldwide, and the company has already started taking pre-orders for the Surface 2 4G in the UK. Only the 64GB version of the tablet will be available and it will sport a £539 price tag including VAT. The device will arrive on May 8.

"At just 670g, and pre-loaded with Office 2013 RT (now with Outlook), Surface 2 lets you carry less while you do more. Light in your hands, but loaded with improved sound and picture, a faster processor, and extra offers. And you can use it anywhere you've got mobile service on your network," touts Microsoft.

As a reminder, the Surface 2 comes with a 10.1-inch full HD display and packs a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 4 processor under the hood, clocked at 1.7GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM. Being 4G LTE-enabled means that the tablet will always stay connected. As previously mentioned, the slate will ship with Windows RT 8.1 on board, which will bring some notable improvements over the previous version of the OS.

"Surface 2 works brilliantly with Windows RT 8.1. The Start screen keeps you constantly updated with apps that constantly bring you fresh information, and now you can resize the live tiles to fit your needs. Load the apps that you love the most and discover new apps in the Windows Store," adds Microsoft.

The 64GB Surface 2 4G is now available for pre-order in the UK for £539 from the Microsoft Store, and is set to hit retail on May 8.
