Nokia X 2.0 software update off the table for original Nokia X lineup
Alexandra BurlacuThe new Android software platform called Nokia X 2.0 will apparently not be available for the original devices in the Nokia X lineup.
After completing the Nokia acquisition, Microsoft has now introduced its very first Android smartphone called the Nokia X2. The handset runs a new, updated software platform based on Android. Called Nokia X 2.0, the update brings several improvements and new features, but it seems that it's off limits for the original Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL.
Nokia has officially confirmed that the original smartphones in the Nokia X lineup will not be receiving the new Nokia X 2.0 software update because their hardware cannot support it. Nevertheless, the company said it will bring other treats to those devices.
"Because of the necessary hardware upgrades, the Nokia X software platform 2.0 won't be available on Nokia X, Nokia X+ or Nokia XL," Nokia announced in a company blog post detailing the new update. "However, more updates will be coming to further improve the experience of those devices in the coming months.
As a reminder, the first version of the Nokia X platform was based on Android 4.1.2. The new Nokia X 2.0 update, meanwhile, is based on Android 4.3. While the original Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL could in fact support the latest version of the Nokia X software, the folks over at Neowin speculate that the reason behind Microsoft's decision not to update them may be related to the X2's Home Key to launch the multitasking menu.
Microsoft has already faced heavy criticism in the past for not updating Windows Phone 7.x devices to Windows Phone 8, and this new Nokia X platform scheme will likely fuel similar reactions from disgruntled users.
The Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL are entry-level handsets, but they could nonetheless support Android 4.3. The new Nokia X2 is not high-end either, but it does come with a higher processor clock speed and a bit more RAM compared to the original handsets.
With the Nokia X 2.0 software update apparently off the table for the original Nokia X lineup, it remains to be seen what Microsoft will do to make amends and what other updates it will add.
