Android 5.0 Lollipop Wi-Fi bug severely draining battery life, likely causing rollout delay

Android 5.0 Lollipop Wi-Fi bug draining battery life

The final version of the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop reportedly comes with a nasty Wi-Fi bug that severely affects battery life.

Earlier this week, Google officially launched its new Nexus 9 tablet made by HTC as the first device to hit the market with Android 5.0 Lollipop on board. Frustration regarding the new OS was already building up because it has yet to officially roll out to more Nexus devices, but now things get even more heated with news of a Wi-Fi bug draining battery life.

The news comes from a new Android Police report, detailing the issue. Moreover, the official Android Developer Forum has a growing thread on this topic, with mass reports confirming this Android 5.0 Lollipop Wi-Fi bug that drains battery life on the Nexus 5.

As frustration continues to build up, Google Android Senior Developer Trevor Johns has officially confirmed the issue.

"Android Engineering is aware of an issue affecting Nexus 5 users running Android 5.0 which causes significant 'Miscellaneous' battery usage while WiFi is enabled. This appears to be caused by an abnormally high number of IRQ wakeup events. We are continuing to investigate this issue," reckoned Johns on the official Android Developer Forum.

In other words, Johns' response acknowledges the issue, as well as the fact that Google has yet to find a fix for the bug. According to reports on the forum, Nexus 5 testers showed that a full battery lasts for just four hours or even less because of this Wi-Fi bug in Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Other testers, meanwhile, point out that disabling Wi-Fi altogether eliminates this issue, but this is not a desirable solution. Ironically, Google aims to dramatically improve battery life with Android 5.0 Lollipop and its "Project Volta," although for now the result is quite the opposite.

It's worth pointing out that this Wi-Fi bug seems to be affecting only the Nexus 5 for now, and some users are also reporting wider network issues caused by the Nexus 5's Wi-Fi.

"When I switch between two adjacent buildings wifi, it will cripple the entire network for a few minutes," writes user yetAnoth... "So, right now, if I walk away to the nearby building, everyone in that building goes 'the internet is down again!' Then, when I come back everyone in my office groans because they lose their connection for a few minutes."

"I am seeing the same sort of issues as yetAnoth...above me," writes another user. I am seeing horrible network issues anytime I enable wifi on my Nexus5 in my home. If I arrive home and have wifi on it freezes everyone's ability to use pretty much anything for a couple of minutes."

Google has yet to acknowledge whether these Wi-Fi bugs affect other Nexus devices as well, or whether this means that the Nexus 5 will get its Android 5.0 Lollipop update later than others because of these issues. For now, it appears that the new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are not affected, but this bug may be the reason the update is delayed for the Nexus 5 and other devices.
