Qualcomm has officially launched the first handset packing its new 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor: meet the new Mobile Development Platform (MDP) smartphone designed for developers.

MDP devices are working samples that demonstrate the latest technology once it's ready to ship, and they usually arrive several months before the new hardware reaches consumer devices. The new MDP smartphone from Qualcomm now comes to give a taste of the next-generation Snapdragon 810 processor with 64-bit architecture.

The Qualcomm MDP smartphone comes with a massive 6.17-inch QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and 10-finger multi-touch support. Under the hood, the device packs a top-notch Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor, paired with Adreno 430 graphics and a hefty 4GB of LP-DDR4 RAM.

The processing unit is the star of the show here, and the Snapdragon 801 CPU is based on two sets of four Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 cores, built using the 20nm process. This combo is reportedly twice as powerful as the ARM Cortex-A15 32-bit cores powering the Snapdragon 805's Krait 450 cores. The 20nm process on which the Cortex-A57 is built allows for smaller transistors, which should retain roughly the same power efficiency as the Snapdragon 801 and 805.

The new combo also comes with 30 percent faster graphics compared to the Adreno 420 GPU in the Snapdragon 805 processor. The handset itself also has a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization and dual LED flash, able to shoot 4K at 30fps and 1080p at 60fps, while a 4-megapixel front shooter can shoot 1080p video at 120fps. On the software side, the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop runs the show.

"The Mobile Development Platform Smartphone (MDP/S) is an early development platform for developers. This next-generation smartphone provides application developers and device manufacturers with early access to a high-performance platform for development, testing and optimization of Android applications," reads the product description. "This development device is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Ultra HD processor, which includes a 64-bit octo-core CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 430 GPU and the newest Qualcomm Hexagon DSP, along with the latest available Android OS. It is the first commercially available Android development platform with high-performance DDR4 memory and is much thinner than previous MDP development hardware (9.9mm)."

"Game and multimedia developers will enjoy its 6.2" Quad HD display with an incredible 490 pixels per inch. Advanced multimedia capabilities include hardware-based Ultra HD 4K H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC) video capture and playback. Connectivity includes Qualcomm VIVE 2-stream 802.11ac with new multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) for extremely fast data transfer speeds."

The MDP smartphone also comes with a slew of sensors, including 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor, a pressure sensor, UV sensor, temperature and humidity sensor, as well as a Mobeam sensor. The latter aims to allow users to scan, collect, and send barcodes with "blinking light."

Other notable specs and features rocking this new Qualcomm MDP smartphone include no less than eight microphones, 11.1 surround sound with Dolby and DTS, SecureMSM digital rights management, Snapdragon StudioAccess technology, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 3.0, and a fingerprint reader. A 3,020 mAh battery keeps everything up and running.
