High-end Ubuntu smartphone coming at MWC 2015 as Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition
Alexandra BurlacuA high-end Ubuntu smartphone will debut next week at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 as the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition.
This handset will arrive as the second smartphone to run Ubuntu, following the BQ Aquaris E4.5. While the first Ubuntu smartphone came with modest specifications, however, the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition is expected to rock high-end specs all around.
The original Meizu MX4 launched back in September 2014 with Android on board, sporting powerful specifications that made it very popular. Meizu has now announced that it will introduce a new version of the smartphone at the upcoming MWC 2015 trade show next week, and this model will run Ubuntu Touch OS instead of Android. The company posted neat teasers on its Twitter account ahead of the big unveiling, and the smartphone looks quite sleek (see image above).
While the software will obviously be different on the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition, the specs are expected to remain mainly unchanged compared to the original model.
As a reminder, the Android-powered Meizu MX4 features a 5.36-inch display with a thin bezel, a resolution of 1920 x 1152 pixels, and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Under the hood, the handset packs an octa-core MediaTek MT6595 SoC based on the Cortex A17 and A7 CPUs, paired with PowerVR G6200 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Internal storage capacity comes in three options - 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. Other specs include a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter, and a 3,100 mAh battery.
The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition could come with some changes in specs compared to the original model, but they will likely be minor. Meizu has yet to offer details on the specs, features, pricing, and availability of its new MX4 Ubuntu Edition, but should provide more information in just a few short days, when it unveils the new smartphone at the MWC.
It also remains unclear at this point whether the new Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition will launch in the same markets as the original market or whether it will enjoy wider availability, but it should all become clear soon enough. All in all, one thing's for sure: a high-end Ubuntu smartphone is finally en route and we're excited to see what it brings to the table.
