Apple Launches iOS 9 Today

The rush to update to Apple's latest OS starts now. The company has been very proud of the major changes and evolution they made to their latest installment, and it's not hard to imagine why. The update became available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch at exactly 10:00am PDT. There are reports that some users are having problems downloading the update and Apple has yet to comment on the issue.

Initial tweets about the update from several users, suggests that the new font is less than desirable and some are delaying to update to see if any major problems would arise. The more apparent revelation to those who updated it is the missing new emojis that are only available to those who were in Beta. For everyone else, the new set of emojis will be in iOS 9.1. There are also several comments about the new icon "Find Friends" and the new Health data app that tracks reproductive health, particularly the user's sexual activity.

Hilarity aside, the new iOS 9 is suppose to extend battery life and it also added a power saving mode to conserve battery when you're about to run out. The install footprint was significantly lower than the previous OS, down to 1.3 GB compared to the iOS 8, which was a whopping 4.58 GB. Siri also got a much needed upgrade, as it was visibly trailing behind Microsoft and Google's own virtual assistant. The Proactive Assistant promises to deliver the same intuitive content as Google Now minus the invasive data sharing.

Other features on the new iOS 9 include the new keyboard and several innovations to the Apple Maps. The app will now provide information on public transport directions and other pertinent information like bus schedules and delayed flights. While it still doesn't have the awesome contextual search that Google has, the app has come a long way since it was first released.

Meanwhile, the WatchOS 2 update, that was suppose to be released around the same time as iOS 9, has been delayed due to bugs in the software. Apple has confirmed the issue but failed to detail when the update will be available for download.
