Teens that are tech - savvy will have to find a new way to date people now, since Tinder has officially announced that they will be barring users under the age of 18.
Since its inception in 2012, the dating site has allowed users from the age of 13 years to create a profile, like Facebook. This has allowed teenagers to find dating mates of their age online. However, starting next week, a newly undertaken policy will block any underage users, reported TechCrunch.
"On a platform that has facilitated over 11 billion connections, we have the responsibility of constantly assessing our different user experiences, "Tinder mentioned in an official statement. "
Consistent with this responsibility, we have decided to discontinue service for under 18 users. We believe this is the best policy moving forward. This change will take effect next week."
"We've been reviewing this policy since early this year and believe it's the right thing to do," said a Tinder spokesperson.
Notably, this announcement comes shortly after Tinder CEO Sean Rad had promised a transgender - friendly user experience to its users.
According to Tinder records, this change will affect less than 3% of the global user base. "A number of factors go into making a decision like this, but we're confident we landed on the right policy," said a spokesperson.
Meanwhile, other than barring users below 18, Tinder has also made some noteworthy changes reported PC Mag. The introduction of the "Super Like", along with an opportunity to include job and educational background in the profile falls within this category. In addition, users will be also able to share their profiles with friends and families.
That being said, now that Tinder has grown exponentially, it needs a strong moderation and tighter specification in order to allow user safety and the enforcement of user policy.
